We were years from Linux distributions that even pretended at user-friendliness. Early Windows competitors like OS/2 and BeOS had been mostly vanquished. The Mac existed and was still beloved by the proverbial “ crazy ones,” but it was at its nadir in terms of market reach and cultural relevance. If you didn’t live through the era, it’s hard to imagine the extent to which Windows was computing in the late '90s. On the other, it drew intense legal scrutiny, starting with an $8 million settlement with Spyglass (Microsoft had agreed to pay Spyglass royalties based on IE sales and had then bundled it for free with Windows, technically generating zero revenue) and continuing with a landmark antitrust case brought by the US government. On the one hand, IE’s market share shot upward dramatically in 19, taking a huge bite out of Netscape’s share simply by virtue of being available by default on most Windows 95-era PCs. Microsoft’s bundling of Internet Explorer with Windows-and, by the time Windows 98 and Internet Explorer 4 rolled around, the browser’s ever-deeper integration into the rest of the operating system-was a double-edged sword. But Windows 95 was taking over the computing world at the time, and Microsoft used its increasing dominance of the PC platform to push its other products, IE first among them. The first few versions of IE weren’t especially noteworthy, and they mainly played catch-up with Netscape while adding support for more platforms (by the time version 3.0 rolled around in mid-1996, IE ran on Windows 95, NT, and 3.1, as well as 68K and PowerPC Macs). ![]() Microsoft was just one of the companies that licensed the Spyglass version of Mosaic the company hoped to jump into the browser market quickly by putting its name on an existing browser rather than building one from scratch. Microsoft licensed a version of Mosaic from Spyglass, Inc., which itself had licensed the original version of Mosaic with the intent of unifying its disparate codebases and making the browser support the same features on all supported platforms. One of these offshoots was Internet Explorer. Others were direct offshoots of Mosaic and used its trademarks and source code. Some, like Netscape Navigator, were their own distinct projects, though many of the people who created Netscape had worked on Mosaic first. Google Chrome is on top of the world today, but that didn't happen overnight, and the browser wars have been nothing if not cyclical. IE's heyday is a distant memory, but the entire story is worth knowing. For those who weren't there, we've put together a brief history of the life and times of Internet Explorer. That's the end of the line for Internet Explorer, a browser that annihilated all competitors in the late-'90s browser wars only to be decisively wiped out in the early-2010s browser wars. For users and businesses who need Internet Explorer to access individual websites, Microsoft will continue to support IE mode in Microsoft Edge until "at least 2029." IE mode combines the user interface of Edge with IE11's old Trident rendering engine, allowing older websites that don't render correctly in newer browsers to continue to work. Microsoft says that people who open Internet Explorer "over the next few months" will "progressively" be redirected toward Microsoft Edge instead, which will offer to import all bookmarks and saved passwords to ease the transition. It was never installed on Windows 11 PCs at all. The final version of the browser, Internet Explorer 11, will no longer receive support or security updates starting today, and it will gradually be removed from Windows 10 PCs via a Windows Update at some point in the future. The political scientist Georgia Duerst-Lahti distinguishes between masculism, which expresses the ethos of the early gender-egalitarian men's movement, and masculinism, which refers to the ideology of patriarchy. However, many believe that one sex is more discriminated against, and thus use one label and reject the other. He argued that if masculism and feminism refer to the belief that men/women are systematically discriminated against, and that this discrimination should be eliminated, there is not necessarily a conflict between feminism and masculism, and some assert that they are both. ![]() ![]() Īccording to Ferrel Christensen, a Canadian philosopher and president of the former Alberta-based Movement for the Establishment of Real Gender Equality, "Defining 'masculism' is made difficult by the fact that the term has been used by very few people, and by hardly any philosophers." He differentiates between "progressive masculists", who welcome many of the societal changes promoted by feminists, while believing that some measures to reduce sexism against women have increased it against men, and an "extremist version" of masculism that promotes male supremacy. Masculinism, according to Brittan, maintains that there is "a fundamental difference" between men and women and rejects feminist arguments that male–female relationships are political constructs. ![]() Sociologists Arthur Brittan and Satoshi Ikeda describe masculinism as an ideology justifying male domination in society. The gender-studies scholar Julia Wood describes masculinism as an ideology asserting that women and men should have different roles and rights owing to fundamental differences between them, and that men suffer from discrimination and "need to reclaim their rightful status as men". Sociologist Robert Menzies wrote in 2007 that both terms are common in men's rights and anti-feminist literature: "The intrepid virtual adventurer who boldly goes into these unabashedly mascul(in)ist spaces is quickly rewarded with a torrent of diatribes, invectives, atrocity tales, claims to entitlement, calls to arms, and prescriptions for change in the service of men, children, families, God, the past, the future, the nation, the planet, and all other things non-feminist." The Oxford English Dictionary (2000) defines masculinism, and synonymously masculism, as: "Advocacy of the rights of men adherence to or promotion of opinions, values, etc., regarded as typical of men (more generally) anti-feminism, machismo." According to Susan Whitlow in The Encyclopedia of Literary and Cultural Theory (2011), the terms are "used interchangeably across disciplines". Sampson wrote in a letter to the New York Times that women must share the blame for war: "It is perfectly useless to pretend that men have fought, struggled and labored for themselves, while women have stayed at home, wishing they wouldn't, praying before the shrines for peace, and using every atom of their influence to bring about a holy calm." Definition and scope Gilman referred to men and women who opposed women's suffrage as masculists-women who collaborated with these men were "Women Who Won't Move Forward" -and described World War I as "masculism at its worst". Allen writes that Gilman used masculism to refer to the opposition of misogynist men to women's rights and, more broadly, to describe "men's collective political and cultural actions on behalf of their own sex", or what Allen calls the "sexual politics of androcentric cultural discourses". Apparently the printer did not like the term and tried to change it. Terminology Early history Īccording to the historian Judith Allen, Charlotte Perkins Gilman invented the term masculism in 1914, when she gave a public lecture series in New York entitled "Studies in Masculism".

For example, a Color Munki Display uses hardware that’s nearly identical to the X-Rite i1 Display Pro, but the software that comes with it is simplified and more limited.Īn extension of that above point is that you can save some money by buying a lower end hardware and pairing it with significantly more powerful software. However, 3rd party profiling systems, whether they’re open source and free, like Argyll CMS, or commercial software have to compete on different terms. At least in my experience, the software that comes with your colorimeter is often designed to be fast and deliver reasonably good quality. However, every system is designed to balance many factors, for instance, quality versus speed. That’s not to say that the built in software is designed to be low quality. The biggest reason, in my opinion at least, is quality. The question then is why would you want to replace that software with something else? Virtually every piece of commercially available color calibration hardware comes with software to go with it. |
